YDF26 Artist 06 Q&A: Madison Kaye

What’s your background?
Born and raised in Rochdale, my journey in the arts started at the age of 7. I was obsessed with the thought of being on stage, performing and was always a creative thinker. So I enrolled into a variety of classes that consisted of Acting, Singing & Dancing.
Leading me to now, where I am a jack of all trades, with a background in Sketch Comedy and creating accessible workshops/film & stage performances.
Who are your biggest influences?
Artistically? Who inspired you to become an artist?
In terms of Sketch Comedy my biggest influences are comedians like Bo Burnham & Amy Poehler. However the 1996 film Matilda gave me the spark to express my differences and become an access advocate as well as an artist.
How have you developed your career?
(From student to artist)
My passion for theatre carried over to my education where I studied Theatre Performance & Production for 4 Years, completing university w/ First Class BA honours.
Throughout university I never stopped pursuing connections in the industry. Finding roles and experiences that have taught me everything I know today. Working/ collaborating with organisations like; Factory International, DaDaFest, NSDF, The Royal Exchange and local theatre groups like Dare To Know.
How do you seek out opportunities for
work and practice?
Networking!!!
Creative social events are where I thrive and meet the most amazing artists, with the intention to create and collaborate. I also try to keep up my social media presence, and provide constant career updates to help others.
What role does arts funding have to your practice? Could you and would you still be an artist if you weren’t paid to explore your art?
If you are passionate about what you create, the money will follow. However, if you only care about the money, you should probably work at the bank.
What advice would you give to a young artist beginning their journey to become an artist?
The 3 I’s
Inventive – Never stop learning and
don’t be afraid to create something new
Inclusivity – Art is for everyone, create
something that everyone can enjoy.
Individuality – be yourself
