Under 25 Routes - Residential Two - Lisbon - Laboratory Week
by Steph Meskell-Brocken
On the 23rd January 2017 artists – all under the age of 25 – gathered again, for the start of their 2nd residential of the Under 25 Routes project, in Lisbon Portugal. Bringing together 4 artists from Valencia, Spain; 4 artists locally from Lisbon, Portugal and 4 artists from here in the UK. We’ll have a blog from all four of the artists for each week of the residential and for the first week – where an intensive laboratory took place – we have Peshkar Productions Project Manager Steph Meskell-Brocken, who spent the first week with all of the artists over in Lisbon.
Rather than writing a long and detailed blog about this first week of Laboratory in Lisbon, Manchester residency tutor Steph has decided to record some key phrases and ideas that have come up in the initial days:
“Language – Research
Location and space- a reflection of the location of the residence
‘What do you want to do now?’ – The work was limited by being so serious
Non-performers perform – More interdisciplinary
Move from a focus in themes to a focus on form
Think small and in the microcosm than the macrocosm.
I would like to laugh more with ourselves –
I would like to see how we can work as one
What do you want to say
Post Truth- how do we communicate in a world where there is no truth or fact?
Liberty, equality, fraternity. Whatever.
When you don’t know it just say it with an accent
What touches you as a human being? What makes you feel alive?
Everyone is ill
You speak about communication but you do not ask what is communication to you
Why do we choose art as our means of communication?
The ten things that make you feel alive
The ten things that block you and make you unable to move and communicate
Poetic opinion
An actor, a poet, a turtle
I don’t understand the story but I get a terrible pain in my knees.”
The twelve residents will now move into their four intensive weeks, working towards a second sharing of work in Lisbon at the end of February.
